Info

Volta eSIM is a travel connectivity platform designed to help users quickly find, purchase, and manage destination-based eSIM plans. The project focused on creating a clear, conversion-led website and authenticated user experience, combining destination search, reusable product templates, cashback rewards, referral systems, affiliate tools, and account management into one scalable digital platform.

Impact & Context

Impact & Context

The Impact

Volta eSIM needed a platform that could feel as simple as buying a SIM card at an airport kiosk while running a full travel commerce business underneath it. I designed and built the complete product and design system for that experience from scratch, destination search, fixed data packages, cashback, referrals, subscriptions, affiliate payouts, and account management. The design system is finished; Volta is now working through the backend integration and business process required to connect with its eSIM provider before the platform goes live.

Highlights

  • Complete design system built from scratch: Delivered the full visual and component system for Volta's product, ready to support launch once backend integration is complete.

  • Complexity made invisible: Structured cashback, referrals, subscriptions, affiliate tools, and account management behind a simple destination-search-to-purchase flow.

  • Reusable product architecture: Built reusable product page templates instead of one-off designs per destination, so the catalogue can scale without new design work per country.

  • Decision-fatigue-first UX: Prioritised fast search, clear product pages, and contextual guidance over broad plan comparisons, reducing the number of decisions a traveller has to make before purchasing.

Organizational Context

  • Product strategy: Defined to give Volta a complete, scalable design system ahead of launch, so the business could move fast once its backend and eSIM provider integration are finalised.

  • Discovery & UX research: Focused on reducing decision fatigue for travellers purchasing data on the go, shaped by how complex the underlying commercial system needed to be: cashback, referrals, subscriptions, affiliate payouts, and device compatibility.

  • Metrics: Not yet available. Volta has not launched publicly, the platform is in a pre-launch phase pending a backend integration and business process with its eSIM provider.

  • Processes: 1 Lead Product Designer, 2 Product Designers, 3 Software Developers working remotely (Canada / Global), an ongoing engagement since 2026.

Design Challenge

Design Challenge

Volta eSIM's product had to work on two levels at once. On the surface, a traveller needed to find a destination, compare a small number of clear data packages, understand how an eSIM actually works, and purchase in a few steps, often from an airport or a taxi with patchy signal. Underneath, the platform had to support cashback, referral tracking, subscriptions, affiliate payouts, device compatibility checks, billing, and post-purchase eSIM management, an ecosystem far more complex than a typical e-commerce checkout. The challenge was keeping that complexity entirely out of the traveller's way while still giving Volta the commercial machinery a growth-stage travel-tech business needs.

The Result

The Result

The result is a complete, ready-to-launch design system built around reducing decision fatigue instead of maximising choice. Fast destination search, clear product pages, reusable templates, simple calls to action, and contextual guidance are all in place, with referral and affiliate systems designed as first-class parts of the core product rather than a separate portal, and account management built to handle top-ups, subscriptions, and multiple active eSIMs in one place. The experience is fully designed and ready to ship; Volta is now finalising the backend integration and business process with its eSIM provider needed to take it live.

Personal Reflection

Personal Reflection

Volta reinforced how much good travel UX is about protecting attention, not adding features. The instinct on a product like this is to explain everything, how eSIMs work, what each plan includes, how cashback and referrals pay out, but a traveller comparing options on patchy airport wifi doesn't have room for that. The real work was hiding a genuinely complex commercial system, packages, cashback, subscriptions, affiliate payouts, device compatibility, behind a handful of fast, confident decisions. The design system is finished and ready to launch; what's left is largely outside my control, the backend integration and business process Volta needs to finalise with its eSIM provider, but seeing a complete, scalable system ready to go the moment that's resolved is what I'm proudest of here.

Product Vision & Next Steps

Product Vision &
Next Steps

The immediate next step isn't design, it's the backend integration and business process Volta is finalising with its eSIM provider, the piece the platform depends on to go live. Once that's resolved, the design system and product experience are ready to ship as they stand. From there, the roadmap is already built into the product: referral and affiliate growth loops start driving signups beyond paid traffic, account management scales to handle repeat top-ups and multi-destination trips, and the reusable product template architecture lets Volta expand into new destinations without additional design work. The platform was built to be ready the moment the business side clears the way.
